Everyone dissociates.   “Normal” dissociation often takes the form of daydreaming or “spacing out.” While a person is dissociating, he or she experiences a temporary mental escape from whatever is happening at the moment.  This altered state of consciousness may occur during a long drive, an engrossing book or movie, or some boring activity.  Occasionally losing touch with our immediate surroundings is practically a universal experience.  However, some of us frequently or chronically dissociate, creating gaps in our memory or affecting our sense of identity.Shattered: Dissociative Identity Disorder
