The Backlash: Survivors’ Obstacles to Being Believed

Categories: , Tags: ,

As victims of childhood sexual abuse, we sometimes face disbelief when we
gather our courage to tell what has happened to us. As we work to become
Survivors, instead of victims, we are faced with the denial of our families and
society as well as our own self-doubt. Our early conditioning taught us to
disbelieve ourselves and ignore our perceptions that harmful things were being
done to us by those who were supposed to love and care for us. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves is to
stop trying to convince others and focus instead on what we want from life and
how we are going to achieve it.
