Survivors’ obstacles to being believed. As victims of childhood sexual abuse, we sometimes face disbelief when wegather our courage to tell what has happened to us. As we work to becomeSurvivors, instead of victims, we are faced with the denial of our families andsociety as well as our own self-doubt. Our early conditioning taught us todisbelieve ourselves and ignore our perceptions that harmful things were beingdone to us by those who were supposed to love and care for us. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves is tostop trying to convince others and focus instead on what we want from life andhow we are going to achieve it.
